Sometimes, one doesn't have a choice about checking items that are rather expensive. Samples, equipment, items that won't fit in a carry-on and for one reason or another cannot be shipped separately all fit this category. Heck, when I check my ski gear, the retail value is pretty high, and if I were to check a pair of Sterlings, we'd be higher than the $4k!
