Really pocketable and with very good features is the new Canon S90. It's like a shrunk G11. Very sweet camera. The preview shots at ISO800 on dpreview are very impressive. Iso 3200 looks like ISO800 on my G9. I can tell there is progress.
Otherwise, the new Panasonic DMC-ZR1 that steps in the footsteps of the TZ-4 and TZ-50. The LX-3 has really good image quality but the zoom of 24-60 is very limited. The S90 with 28-105 is better in that regard and is smaller, too. That one fits in a jacket pocket.

I would suggest OP should try DPreview.com -> Buying Guide -> Feature Search. Or post a question in the Beginner Forum. Individual brand forums have people passionate about that brand, which can be a good source of information but not objective opinion. Good new models seem to be from Canon (S90), Fuji (F70EXR?), Sony (WX2?) and Panasonic (ZR1). However, companies like Casio or Samsung can never be counted out.
However, OP's 2 week time frame is problematic, as many of these models are in the process of being introduced and may not be on the shelves yet.
G11 is a very built camera, but why would you want to pay for that kind of rugged construction? Digital cameras are still evolving fast and whatever you get will be outdated soon. This is not something you'd be using twenty years from now - except as a paperweight.
PS. Also, take a look at
kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm.
Thanks for all of the suggestions and info. I think the Canon S90 has moved to the top of list. I wondered about the less-than-full lens retraction on the LX3. Also no lens cap on the S90 is a plus.
Two weeks was a bit overstated. I am leaving in early November for an extended period and would like to be familiar with the new camera by then. For serious shots, I will have my D700 with lenses but there will be many times when I don't want to lug that much gear.
May need to get on the list at favorite local camera store.
