Fortunately, and as a Yank BMI Gold I use UA and US lounges a good deal, the agents have crib sheets where they can compare the piece of plastic you show them with pictures of all the pieces of plastic that are supposed to let people in.
Some of the agents need those crib sheets, unfortunately.
