On a trip last week the HI Express at Nashville Airport tried to charge me a $3/day energy surcharge. Their web page did mention a $1.50/day energy surcharge. When I argued that I shouldn't have to pay more than the listed price then showed my printed confirmation, they took the entire $3 charge off.

You know the worst thing about these energy surcharges are that when they add them at the last minute or try to change the terms of it, you feel like you are a fool if you don't stand up for yourself and argue about it. But if you do, it is both embarrassing and upsetting. It seems like you lose both ways. FWIW, I stayed at 5 different hotels in Oregon over the next 8 days including a HI Express in Portland and none of the hotels there charged an energy surcharge. A number of Tennessee hotels have added this charge even though Tennessee has some of the lowest energy costs in the country. Sheesh!
