So it probably depends on the equipment used to print out the pass, or what is in the booking.

Also it seems to depend on the flight, which seemed quite odd to me.

I had two boarding passes printed when I checked in at NRT at the counter, one for the flight from there and the other for a connecting flight from LHR T5. The one for NRT-LHR had "Emerald/QF/XXXXXXXX" in the box on the left hand side of the BP as you mentioned. The one for the connecting flight said "Departs Terminal 5" and none of my status/FF information in that box.
