What does *Paper Required* on BP mean?

Last week I saw this printed on my boarding pass for the second leg of my RDU-IAD-LHR flight. Also, hand written on it by the gate agent was "autocert". This was a miles-upgraded flight, booked in H class, and waitlisted until the day of the flight. I had cleared the 1st leg in RDU and 2nd leg at the gate in IAD. I thought in horror that they might have deducted one of my few SWU's for the second leg, but everything was intact when I later looked at my account.

Just wondering if anyone has ever seen this.
