I think that's partly because the software's implementation of it is just too anemic. To truly ignore someone, you shouldn't be seeing any notice whatsoever that there is a post by the person in question.

For Firefox users, this extension does the trick. It really is an "Ignore" feature in every sense; there is no trace whatsoever of the user. Very nice.
