Although we natives like to tease about people from elsewhere calling it Frisco, it is not an insult...even among those of us who are the biggest SF snobs (and a 50-year native) ! Our city's economy depends on tourism, and if you are from elsewhere, you are our guest, and we hope you fall in love with this City, as so many others do, enjoy your visit, and come back often.
The above poster "lililolo" who mentioned R&G Lounge has made a good suggestion. You will find good seafood there, including the fish tanks you refer to. Also, you have a good mix of locals and tourists there, with lots of families and children, so you will be very comfortable. If you are driving, it is especially convenient, as you can park in the Portsmouth Square garage just a few yards away.
If you are taking a taxi or driving, after dinner you can enjoy a leisurely walk through Chinatown and enjoy the sights and sounds....something you cannot do in the "Sunset District" as mentioned by poster "PTravel" above. In fact, after dinner and that walk through Chinatown, you can continue a few blocks up into the North Beach (Italian) neighborhood, for an after-dinner drink or coffee. There are any number of quaint coffeehouses there.
I don't know what date you are looking at for this meal, but one other item of note -- the Chinatown "Autumn Moon Festival" will be held this weekend, which will add to the festive feel in the neighborhood. You might even pick up a Moon Cake to take back to your hotel !
thank you very much !! I have been many times to SFO before and done all the normal tours...this time, I want to hit Chinatown so I can eat some fresh seafood.
It has been 6 months since my last visit to HKG/SIN and in ELP, the Chinese food is TERRIBLE !!
