I don't think anyone flies MKE-ORD, they drive, take the train, or the bus. Same with SFO-SMF.
SFO-RNO, however, has a lot of point-to-point traffic, as it's a 3.5 to 4-hour drive.
I bought an ORD-MKE once. I can't remember why though, and it was probably an L and not an M.
My favorite itinerary for wasting time and money was SBN-ORD-MKE which I once did when I didn't feel like driving through Chicago in a truck prone to overheating during rush hour in the summer after driving 14 hours

I took the return some quiet Sunday morning and drove the rest of the way.
