Business hat on..no balancing act.
I'm 100% sure that AA and all of the competitors know what UA's and DL's flight schedules are, without having to do dummy bookings on.bomb or delta.com, as well as what the published fares and availability in each bucket (up to 9) are. They can get all the information they need from the professional reservations systems that they use for interline ticketing, IRROPS rebooking, etc.
Hiding info from customers in the online booking engine isn't going to hide it from competitor airlines, who already have much more access to UA and DL's flight schedules and pricing than the typical customer does.
The only balancing act I see is balancing hiding information from consumers to make them pay higher prices than they would with full information...and giving enough information to customers so that it doesn't hurt their brand image or look like an overly obvious scam.

So I'm bored and I'm going to file a complaint with the DC Attorney General's office just for the hell of it.
If you send me a copy of the letter, I'll forward it to my states' AGs (NY and MA) as well! The NY AG Office is pretty litigious.
