United etc. offer premium service between LAX/SFO and NYC because enough people in NYC can afford the premium (service). The same people can afford to pay a premium to fly the A380 in the front (or upper ) cabins.
Not only that, the people going to New York are also more likely to shell out extra $$$ than people bound for Boston or Washington.
