Platman, I won't speak for attorney28, but I'll add my 2 cents.
IMO the road traveled is not worth the reward in Starwood terms. In my regular travels, Hilton exceeds Starwood in properties. I can stay in cities with a choice of Homewood, Garden Inn's and Hamptons that blow away the Starwood 4 points in those locations. If I'm going to spend 50-70 nights on the road, I'm not going to settle for the 6 nights in a nicer resort.
I'd love to stay on an award stay at the Westin in ST John, but I'm not going to stay in the 4 points in Buffalo to get there.
If you are regularly staying in major cities and have a choice of the Westin or the W over a conference sized Hilton, I would agree, but in my case Hilton has provided newer attractively priced options that I prefer.
