It was probably just another laptop or wireless device with 802.11... enabled. I see that all the time when I power up my laptop or smartphone on ships I know not to have WiFi...in "airline mode" of course!
I have been noticing more people leaving everything on during flights lately. The last 3 or 4 flights, my audio was interrupted by the familiar buzz of GSM data to/from the Blackberry of my seatmate. In one case, the guy spent a fair amount of time actually sending and receiving email.
I don't know... just seemed weird to me...
