In general I like to give tips to staff members that have been helpful. Sometimes, during a long stay, it seems the same people have helped over and over again and I will often give $5-20, depending on the person. Its not everytime but sometimes it just seems the right thing to do. I have always hoped this would make them treat the next guest with the same service. I can't speak directly about HKG hotels.
