FWIW, I've gotten waitlist upgrades on LAX-CUN, CUN-LAX, ORD-SEA, and used a cert to upgrade SEa-MCO (that I had to take back in order to make an earlier flight). And there's plenty of U on the Hawaii routes, as well as DCA-LAX, and the Bay Area/Greater LA/Vegas routes generally have it as well.
While I make sure I am always on flights that I will be upgraded on, along with a good chunk of this forum, a lot of people who "dont know any better" make poor choices, and frankly don't care to check later. Unless it was an itn i influenced, not one person who asked for a cert had U inventory available at that time. This has just been my personal experience.
