Were you not compensated by the airline or hotel when they did not have your reserved seat/room? Hotel/airlines/passengers all play the revenue management game. Hotels and airlines overbook, passengers generally don't mind and sometimes even plan "BUMP" runs hoping to get bumped.
I have been "walked" from a guaranteed room before and the hotel always paid for the other room, allowed me to call my family with the new number, provided transportation to the other hotel if necessary and back in the morning and generally meals. In addition they did NOT charge me for the original reservation. I consider that compensation to have a "free" room night.
I have also been "bumped" by the airlines, here again they got me on another flight and gave me some form of compensation.
I have also "lost" my fair when I failed to fly on a Non-refundable, Non-changeable ticket and paid for rooms that I could not make the hotel that evening. An agreement is an agreement.
It is possible the hotel had to "walk" another customer to save the room for you. Not very likely, but possible. So yes, if you agreed to rent the room that night you owe for it unless you called before there cancelation deadline which I am sure you agreed upon during the initial reservation.
