Thanks for everyone that responded. I just got back from HNL and posting my experience re: the question I asked on this thread earlier:

1. HNL ticket counter opens at 930am (they are open from 545am - 645am also). I went to HNL at 930am and checked in 2 bags (of the 4 total) under my name and no questions asked even though I was on AA102, the 7pm DFW flight.

2. There were no problems checking the remaining bags under other family's names when all of us showed up 2 hours prior to departure.

3. They are strict about the weight limit (even as Elite) and I got dinged as mrs stuffed all the HI gifts (think boxes) into the large bag. My 2nd bag didn't have enough room for the adjustments between the 2 bags. FYI, there are self service scales when you enter the "Lobby" area for AA in case you are not sure.

P.S. If you do this, try to get someone to drive you (if possible to save on the parking). The parking is steep (for HNL) $1 for 1st 30min, and $2 addl for 31min - 60min. I was there 31min total and had to pay the $3.
