Were you able to get the baggage fee waived for the non-elite passenger on the segments where you had an elite passager on the same flight but on a separate reservation? As many elites split the reservation for upgrades (and hence get a new reservation), as long as you drop bags with your wife at the same time as you check-in, and you're on the same flight (outbound) she enjoys your free bags. I think the code for the bag attendants is GG 1ST BAG or GG 2ND BAG.
So either way, your wife should get at least one bag, if not two. The return may be a bit tougher. The only way out of that one would have been to book both of you at the same time, split the reservation, cancel yours, and rebook. Theoretically, the system should give you at least one bag free.
To be fair, I never tried this approach yet, but do have a flight coming soon (mirroring your example, but with parents replacing wife) and will test it myself.
