Not true. In the wild world of US they don't consider Canada, Caribbean, or Mexico to be international in terms of lounge access. For their own members, UA members or anyone else.
If anyone got in it was either because of a lazy agent or they showed an international star alliance card and the agent just assumed you were on an int'l trip, which would grant you access.
