The miles on the upgrade seem fair - the preflight upgrades book into P or T which do earn more.
I think as an AA frequent flyer I would be cautious though as the AA mileage credit definition page (mentioned above) does not indicate that P class earns any miles (crediting to AA)
I do keep hoping they will offer an upgrade on my LHR-MCT segment though as the LONEx upgrade fee is a bit steep for that flight
