It makes sense for CO to use the flat-bed 772 on the EWR-HKG route, to compete against flat-beds used by United and Cathay Pacific (United flies 747s with flat-beds to HKG, but flies 777s with old-style J seats to the other destinations in China, including Beijing and Shanghai).
Perhaps I was not clear. It will not be operating constantly on the EWR-HKG route. Indeed it cannot as the EWR-HKG flight needs to happen every now and then with a non-upgraded plane so that it can get to HKG's shop to be converted. I just meant that the first flight would be HKG-EWR as it comes out of the shop.
CO does not dedicate specific planes to specific routes. They cycle the planes throughout the system to increase their utilization numbers.
