Using MFU when you have domestic connection

I am looking at booking EDI to MIA in April 2010 using MFU from WT+ to Club.

The straight WT+ fare is a very reasonable - 743.50

I have checked LHR to MIA on the day in question - and they have availability for mile redemptions.

I cannot get MFU to work just now - but if I do a straight miles booking (no MFU) for EDI to MIA - it comes up with a crazy route involving LCY.

If I book in WT+ the whole journey - will it allow me to upgrade just the LHR to MIA leg or because there appears to be nothing available for EDI to LHR that day - will it stop me?

Will have to do my usual and book as two seperate tickets - one for the domestic and one for the long haul - or does someone know a way around it?

Got stung last year when I did this and they then cancelled the early morning domestic to London - ended up having to change the domestic to the previous day and getting a hotel at my own expense.
