I think you can book a stopover on nwa.com by using the multi-city search for award tickets. Since only the NRT-LAX segment is likely operated by NW/DL, I don't think you will have married segment problems.
I tried the Multi City option before but it kept giving me an error (said it was not bookable) but it shows up ok if I just left NRT out of the airport selection and let NWA.com give me the selection. It just meant no stopover.
