BOS Doubletree Downtown -- how to get there and what to do.

I will be spending three nights at the Boston Doubletree Downtown and my first question is what the best way to get there from Logan? I know the subway is the least expensive but I will have two large suitcases with me. In NYC, this would make it impossible. Does Boston have elevators in its stations and, if so, would you recommend taking the subway?

While I will undoubtedly make the obligatory pilgrimage to Paul Revere's house and a few other landmarks, I mostly enjoy walking around cities -- especially if they have interesting neighborhoods (like NY's Greenwich Village) or South Philly. Do you have any you can recommend that are within a reasonable distance from the Doubletree?

Lastly, what kind of clothing do I have to pack for late October?
