How soon is the flight? You can try and see if the other flight got switched to a 747 and call UA to see if they'll switch you to that flight. Alternatively, if your travel dates are flexible, since you are on an award, you can try and change the date of your travel to one that does have the new config (and award space available) for no penalty.
Btw, "terrifically disappointed" is an excellent oxymoron to describe your feelings.
