Edinburgh is lovely to visit (I've been several times on holiday and business), but I could never live there. Too cold, dark and damp for my taste.
But the long months of darkness are balanced by the long months of lightness... The reason we take bad with it getting dark at 8 pm in summer is because we have got used to it getting dark at 11 pm!

Anyway, my suggestion is Victoria on Vancouver Island. I love Vancouver Island anyway, and Victoria is a great place to spend some time.
