Yes, that's a pet peeve of mine as well. Although I'm currently in Switzerland and the last 4 hotels I was in (both chain and independent) were doing pretty well in that respect - at least 2-3 were available in each, and considering that the standard outlet here lets you plug 3 separate devices, I'm quite happy.

Now, if the places which provide internet via ethernet cable would put a cable longer than 3 ft, I'll be a happy camper.
