Remember that 12 lucky people will get the former F seats on the A340. They are truly comfortable & do lie flat. But all others will get the older seats which are, for me at 6', not at all comfortable.
I don't know how the F seats are allocated though their website says if you buy certain fare classes you'll automatically get those seats if available. I guess beyond that Mabuhay Miles status factors in.
In flight service should be the same.
Honestly, I'd take a domestic flight to LAX & depart from there. That way you'll almost certainly have a 744 with upgraded seats.
