I have found the exact same thing - on all my flights, and I fare was cheaper than the M.
Which like the OP has rendered my PMUs useless. I have used them a couple times on domestic flights, but in each instance V inventory opened up at my window and I switched it over to a free upgrade.
I will not be selecting any PMUs in the 2010 program.
