If the pass worked for awhile and then stopped, seems like it was not a 7 day pass but instead had a cash value. When it did work, did the machine show you the remaining balance?
Anyway, good luck with it. File the request for the refund, and consider purchase of another pass at a machine. Using a credit card is a good idea.
I agree with other post here -- using the exit door to avoid paying the fare really isn't a good idea.
