dracs, your information about the Amtrak Guest Rewards program is incorrect. AGR points can be redeemed for movie passes, restaurant gift certificates, department store gift certificates, etc. While there are cards with a somewhat better reward ratio, the 5,000-point bonus may be more significant, especially since you are not expecting to charge a lot for the next couple of years.

And don't assume that a lot of credit-card usage is required to get an annual fee waived for the second year. I got the second-year fee (but not the third-year fee) waived on a Priority Club Visa which had relatively little spend (< $1,000) on it the first year. Of course, your experience might be different. But if you have a higher credit limit on your long-haul card, and a relatively low limit on the annual-fee card, cancelling one annual-fee card should not have a very big effect on your FICO score, especially if your average credit utilization is only ~ $250/ month.
