dracs, you are right to be concerned about your credit rating, but if you are looking to get more than one card, I would probably get one card that offers a substantial sign-up bonus and waives the annual fee for the first year (like the AA card if you want a free flight, or the Priority Club Visa if you can use free hotel nights), and then get one other card with no annual fee that you will keep for the duration. (You may also be able to get the annual fee on some cards waived for a second year, so that you won't have to cancel the card after the first year.)

Since you won't be charging all that much in the immediate future, I would just pick as my long-haul card a no-fee one that offers rewards that you would enjoy once you start charging a lot more, whether those rewards be cashback, free trips on Amtrak (Amtrak Guest Rewards MasterCard), Hilton family hotel stays (HHonors American Express card), etc.
