True story--I was consigned to work in Houston the entire summer of 2002, and was shuttling among the different Hilton properties at the Med Center, SW Freeway, etc. The first time I saw the Doubletree Club, I laughed and laughed, but thought, "Well, it *is* closer to downtown than the Embassy or the Hilton SW Freeway...," and so I booked a room.
To my surprise, the room was nice enough. The customer service was not remarkable but certainly not appalling. And the HHonors elite breakfast was a voucher for the Au Bon Pain in the lobby--icy fresh-squeezed and a bagel every morning. Not too shabby.
So I liked it well enough to rebook for the following week (the Med Ctr wasn't available). I asked at the front desk if there was room and they said yes. But when I went online to book, the property could not be found. Nor could an HHonors Reservations agent help. Bottom line was, I couldn't book my reservation.
When I flew back to Houston the following week and drove by, the Doubletree sign was down and the hotel was rebranded as a Holiday Inn Express IIRC. One legendary slide presentation ultimately forced a change in management.
