I don't think they can use many of the old gates. When I flew through SJC yesterday, it looked like old gates A2-A7 were unusable because of that construction project in the middle of the old A gates. So it would leave A8-13 or the new gates. Both of which, except A8 are long walks from security. But at least the new gate areas aren't as narrow. The old ones were a nightmare on Friday evenings.
I was being selfish and looking at it from my maximizing my convenience
My Monday AM flights to PHX always used to leave from A7 which was right where one enters the terminal through security. It was also conveniently across from the starbucks. However, last Monday's flight was from the new terminal...and of course it was the very last gate possible
