There is now no incentive to make someone who carries sports equipment to automatically book with BA and they will probably look at alternatives and perhaps be pleasantly surprised at what else is out there.

The question for BA is whether the revenue increase/cost improvement from this change is greater than the revenue lost by the small minority of passenges who will go off to another airline despite the fact that, fundamentally, the other airline offers nothing better to the average passenger. The chances are that there aren't many passengers who flew with BA because
and only because of the sporting equipment allowance.
And if BA finds that it was wrong about that, it'll be dead easy to get those passengers back.
