MP3/Media Players - Alternatives to iPod Touch?
I've done a bit of googling to determine what's out there for MP3/Media players. My son has a iPod Touch, but its maximum capacity (which I believe is 32GB) is a potential limiting factor. The price is pretty scary too, at close to $400.
One alternative that looks pretty exciting is the Archos 5, with the 250GB model currently selling for under $300 from a variety of sources. Reviews seem a bit mixed, negatives primarily focused on the need to purchase accessories or additional software to obtain its full touted functionality.
I can also hold out until the Zune HD is available, but don't know what it's storage capacity will be . . . the rumored 120GB version appears to be just that, a rumor.
I'm currently (still!) using a RockBox'ed iRiver iHP-120, which has been an awesome music player . . . line-level and optical inputs/outputs, built-in mic for voice notes, and a high-function cabled remote with integrated LCD display that allows you to keep the device tucked away while still providing access to virtually all functions. After 5 1/2 years, it's still going strong on its original battery, providing at least 8 hours of music on a charge. And it fits neatly in my QC2 carrying case along with the headphones.
I do use the line-level and optical outputs of my iRiver regularly, so I'd prefer a player with both . . . line-level is really the deal breaker, though. I'm looking for big storage capacity and a large (but not too large) screen primarily so that I can watch ripped movies in-flight without hauling out my laptop.
Thoughts/opinions gratefully received.
