Think big picture. This is primarily for the purpose of routing. Guangzhou is getting more and more popular and is slowly becoming an international city after Beijing and Shanghai. Many foreign clientes loyal Cathay passengers may want to fly to Guangzhou directly via HKG (Cathay hob) instead of via Beijing or PVG.
These flights also enable Cathay to compete with AF, LH and others on flights originating from Europe to Guangzhou. It is big on trade shows in my business fields and rebounding generally in the manufacturing sector.
