I'm in the same situation. The company I work for demands that the cheapest non-flexible tickets should be used, unless there's a business justification for not doing so.
An acceptable reason is that I don't know when a meeting will end or that I don't know if I must spend an extra day at customer site. If I still miss a flight with a non-flexible ticket, I buy a new one (through corp travel agent). I then must explain what happened to my manager and it better not be my fault
I guess it's a win for the company in the long run even if some tickets are lost. In any case, it's not the airlines responsibility what tickets I buy.
