I'd suggest not doing a one nighter trip to a neighbor island unless you absolutely know you're not coming back to the Islands and there's something in particular you must see (e.g., Volcanoes National Park). Otherwise, for only three days in the Islands, my suggestion would be to stick to Oahu and save the neighbor islands for a later trip.
Thanks for all the information. I am actually traveling with my parents who have already visited Oahu. So perhaps a day flight to one of the islands would be a good compromise?
I think Ill sign up for a beginner surfing lesson. It seems the other sports, kite-boarding, wind surfing are a lot more difficult to pick up in a day ( if not impossible ).
