Yes, and more often than not, the "bosses" are men, and the younger employees (more women) might feel less "empowered" to dish out an upgrade, so that might be where the observed difference in upgrades granted might come from.

That's also what I go by. I tend to smile more at females than at men, though, so they tend to smile back more, so I probably approach the female clerks more. Hmm. I'll try to pay attention to the different "upgrade scoring rates" depending on the gender of the clerk in the future!
