If there is an annual fee, I could see why you don't want concurrent credit cards. Here in Canada, the fee is $75/year. Here's what I did.
Year 1: Sign up for the card, get 20,000 bonus miles plus companion fare.
Year 2: Just before year 1 is up, my wife signed up and got 25,000 bonus miles plus companion. (They increased it from 20,000 miles to 25,000). I cancelled my card.
Year 3: I plan to sign up prior anniversary of my wife's card. then she will cancel her card....and so on until they close the loop.
