It's not really on the other side of a runway; the satellite terminal was built across the parking apron from old terminals 8 & 9. The escalators, elevators and moving walkways make the journey to the satellite nearly effortless - not unlike the nearly identical setup at the UA terminal at ORD.
I completely disagree that it is "effortless." I find it to be an incredibly annoying journey - it can take some 15 minutes to get to the end of that "back" terminal and you are stuck standing on the escalator behind people who refuse to move.
