As per the other response suggesting 50k gets me a reward flight to the US, sounds interesting but the taxes would be €312, plus the €110 for a day trip to reactivate the miles plus petrol/tolls/parking at €50 in other words about €472 for a return to JFK - that vs a cash price of €564. Still cheaper, but during tough times not worth the worry just to save €90.

Might be better me asking nicely if AF would reinstate the miles simply to donate to a good cause - I'd much rather that.

I agree that using 50K for a return Y award to the US is not very attractive. What would be more attractive, however, is using those 50K for a one-way C class award to North America. You can then use your BA miles for the return.
