At least on NW for upgrades. the final tie breaker if everything is equal was the last name. I found this out with a companion upgrade as my wife's last name begins with a B and my last name with an N. She always got the upgrade. But that is only after status, fare basis, date booked etc etc. It was interesting that she got called before me where there was only one seat in 1st.
