This is how it was explained to me.
Platinum are upgraded first. They should clear if there is room. I don't know how it works if there is only room for some.
Gold are upgraded second. Again, I don't know how it works if only some are going to clear.
Then, silvers are upgraded in 24 hours in advance, but lately they have not been upgrading me except at the airport. If this is the case, and there are seats available but the silvers have not been upgraded before the silvers get to the airport, Delta makes the list by the time of your check-in on line.
So, I guess we are both right.

The first part is correct.
PMs are eligible to be upgrade starting 5 days from Departure. If DL makes seats available for Medallion upgrades, PMs will be upgrade according to the upgraded priority below. If DL releases enough seats, all PMs may be upgraded. If DL does not release enough seats, there may be some PMs that do not get the upgrade. DL may choose to release seats for upgrade at any time.
GMs are eligible to be upgrade starting 3 days from Departure. If DL makes seats available for Medallion upgrades, remaining PMs will be upgraded according to the upgrade priority below then GMs. If DL releases enough seats, all PMs & GMs may be upgraded. If DL does not release enough seats, there may be PMs and GMs that do not get the upgrade. DL may choose to release seats for upgrade at any time.
FOs (Silver Medallions) are eligible to be upgrade starting 1 day from Departure. If DL makes seats available for Medallion upgrades, remaining PMs and GMs will be upgraded according to the upgrade priority below then FOs. If DL releases enough seats, all PMs, GMs and FOs may be upgraded. If DL does not release enough seats, there may be PMs, GMs, FOs that do not get the upgrade. DL may choose to release seats for upgrade at any time until 3 hours before departure.
At 3 hours before departure, the upgrade list is transferred to the airport. At the airport, upgrade priority is determined according to the upgrade priority below. All else equal, DL goes to the two tiebreakers below.
Again, check-in time does not factor into your upgrade chances (UNLESS you check in too late (30 mins) before departure time but then you'll most likely have missed your flight).
