Given your status with UA, I'd stick with Mileage Plus. However, keep in mind that since Air Canada is a Star Alliance member, you can use your Aeroplan miles for lots of different flights throughout the US or internationally via any Star carrier.

And I'd definitely go AC from LGA. Worst case, you route through YYZ (Toronto) or YOW (Ottawa). YYZ has hourly flights to LGA.
