I was in the same situation as you - q fare to Madrid. When I called, they wanted me to spend over $1k to get to the next fare to upgrade just for my outbound flight. I was not happy about that and decided that I can use that money for another trip. And I would be waitlisted.
I think it stinks that they won't let you get on the waitlist and then pay if you get upgraded. Why should I spend when it's not even for sure?
