Given that someone is buying a ticket to get the OP to ORD, it might make sense to see if the refare/change fee on the BOS-ORD leg is cheaper than the R/T ticket that OP would need to get to ORD the week before.
As posted, it well may be cheaper to do a R/T and leave the OPs ticket alone, but I wonder if the adjustment is less than the 2nd R/T he'd buy otherwise.... I assume the earlier (but purchased 2nd) ticket is for work, in which case the corporate travel dept may not be well suited to handle such creative ticketing....even if it were a $-wise win.
