Incidentally, when my ex first emailed me this rumor, I actually called the Pasadena police department and eventually got a very nice woman who had been effectively assigned the job of debunking it.

The officer referred to really does exist, and she apparently made this comment in a "private" email to a few friends and then, hey, presto! -- power of the Internet!
