You can prereserve a seat a seat for free (other than the members of the general public) and do not end up in seat 28D on a fully booked flight. You can always prereservice eg 6A and change to bulkhead IF it is available at check-in (and not taken by me as a Gold), so what is the problem? And priority security lines? I fly AB twice a week (about 90 returns YTD on AB) and it works pretty well at DUS, MUC and TXL.
Maybe the best choice for you: Fly them more, get Gold and enjoy. You are currently a cheapo silver member and I remember the times where one could buy the silver card for 20 Euro a year. You are not too far ahead ot the members of the general public, face the hard reality
Considering the price I pay with AB and the service I get (which is miles ahead of comparable LH flights on the same route) I am pretty happy with them, so no reason to talk them down.

If it wasn't for AB, we'd be stuck with FR / Germanwings or LH. They actually combine the nice things about FR (no busses, at least in TXL<->SCN, my main drag) with LH (preassigned seating, decent boarding process, FF program, etc.).
Obtaining Gold with AB isn't that difficult (40.000 miles p.a. if I recall correctly), so go for it.
